March 12
ARES Spring Drill Cancelled!
|
|
The
annual Spring Eastern
Massachusetts Section ARES Drill scheduled
for Saturday, March 12th, 2005 has been cancelled.
Due to the constant barrage of snow storms and their
affiliated activations, it was decided that too many
members and teams were exhausted. Exercises are very important to an ARES
organization particularly in a section like Eastern
Massachusetts which rarely sees a major mobilization
due to significant infrastructure loss over a wide
area. Exercises have been the main-stay of the ARES
organization in Eastern Massachusetts
for several years and we look forward to your
participation and cooperation in future events.
|
|
|
|
Further
information on the next exercise will be announced
at a later date. If you have any immediate questions
please contact Rob Macedo, Eastern Mass S.E.C. or
your ARES D.E.C. or E.C. Look for further updates on
the Eastern Mass ARES
Web Site.

SMHARC
ARES Team Members who were scheduled to participate,
assisted the Norton EMA
Group and their affiliated CERT Team with their own drill with a
scaled down scenario. Check the ARES Team page for
the article on that drill and thanks to everyone who
participated.

2005 Cub Officers -
|
|
Our annual
Election of Officers was held at the December 22,
2004 Business meeting. The only position that had
more than one choice was Vice President. There were
no nominations or volunteers again for the position
of Activities Director. This is disturbing because
this is an important position to the club's welfare.
Unfortunately, it's also a very time consuming and
demanding position. Hopefully, someone will step
forward and give the position a try.

John
Benson - N1FLO will serve another term as President.
John has done an excellent job since taking office -
congratulations John. Gary
Powers - KB1KA and John Bellissimo - KA1EWN were
both nominated for the position of Vice President.
Gary got the votes needed to be elected V.P. for
2005 - congratulations Gary. Ray Cord (need we say
more) will never be allowed to leave the position of
Secretary/Treasurer - congratulations Ray. Will
Rollinson - N1DPY will continue as Equipment Manager. We'd like to thank everyone that made the
effort to attend the meeting. We had eighteen
members and a guest in attendance. It was a great
turnout considering the close proximity to
Christmas. The SMHARC Officers would like to wish
everyone a very safe and Merry Christmas and look
forward to an active and fun 2005. Happy Holidays!

Plainville Fall Festival -
|
|
The Plainville
Fall Festival gave the club an opportunity to set up
a Demo Station and run our Fall ARES Team Exercise.
The Town, through Bruce Bumpus - N1OFC asked us to
join the Plainville EMA, Police and Fire Departments
and the American Red Cross Chapter by setting up a
Demo Table in the Town Park.
|
|
We set up a demo
station using the clubs new Kenwood D700 briefcase radio,
N1IV's demo computer and Ray Cord's X50. We ran both
APRS and SSTV while the HF rig was running in N1IV's
mobile. KA1EWN and WA1NRQ ran mobile with the
Kenwood VC-H1's while N1FLO and K2TGX manned the
base. Several people stopped by to check out the
operation. As you can see in the SSTV image below
left, a member of the Plainville Fire Department
gave us a bird's eye view of the Festival via one of
the VC-H1's from atop Plainville's Ladder 1. Our
station was setup just out of sight to the right and
seen in the 2nd photo. Visible from left to right -
American Red Cross, W1SMH/P and Plainville EMA.
Thanks to everyone that helped out.

It was announced
on December 17th, that the Sturdy Memorial Hospital

"extraordinary clubs" which actively pursue all aspects of Amateur Radio: new ham development and
training, public relations, emergency
communications, school club support,
technical advancement, operating activities, annual reports, etc. "Through the
work of its members, the Sturdy ARC is recognized for its continued efforts on
behalf of Amateur Radio and services to its community," said ARRL staff member
Thomas M. Cote, KB1KOS. The club was notified in a letter to SMHARC
secretary/treasurer Ray Cord, K2TGX. EMA Section Manager, K9HI, and New
England Division Director, K1KI were also copied on

Congratulations
to all members of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital ARC
on this notable accomplishment! Members have given
of their time and skills to advance the
service/hobby and have proven
that hard work and perseverance do pay off.
Special congratulations to John Benson -
N1FLO, SMHARC President, who has been
instrumental in the development of the
SMHARC ARES Team and our new Skywarn
affiliation. These accomplishments have
helped to broaden our base of available
services and add to a long list of community
involvement projects. Again, congratulations
to our entire membership on the ARRL
"Special Service Club"
designation... a job well done!
