- Rojack's Road Race -

The Crew at Rojack's Road Race!    The Annual Sturdy Memorial Hospital/Rojack's Run was held on a cool but sunny Sunday, October 5th. A large crowd was in attendance and the SMHARC had it's usual duty as Race Communications provider. We also setup a P.R./Information Booth as in past years. This year, however, we were asked to move inside on the outer edge of the track where runners finished the race. It was really nice to be in that area where our presence was noticed by many. The Race Staff even used the position data from out APRS bicycle that were at different spots along the race course. As always, several
Kenwood VC-H1's were in use sending back images of the race to our information booth.
Members in attendance were N1FLO, KA1EZH, KB1JLU, N1MPT, N1PRU, WA1NRQ, N1DPY, K1YWS, N1SEC, K1JWP, K2TGX and KB1DRL. (Please forgive me if I forgot anyone... as a matter of fact, email me and let me know.) We were thanked by the Race Organizers and the Hospital Staff in attendance for another job well done.

The Earth Day Clean-up Crew!

Earth Day at WWI Memorial Park

Earth Day means Field Day Site Clean-up Day, too! A team of SMHARC members included K1YWS, W1BRM, W1CJM, N1PRU, N1MPT, WZ1K, N1IV, W1XS, KA1EWN and N1DPY. The Park was in much better shape than in past years but some work was still needed. The job was done in a professional manner... thanks to everyone who contributed. SMHARC members volunteer each year to show appreciation to the town for the use of the park for ARRL's Annual Field Day exercise, held the last full weekend in June.

The 2002 King Phillip Trail Rider's National Enduro

Several members of the SMHARC provided remote communications support for the King Phillip Trail Rider's National Enduro motorcycle event in Wrentham. Under the leadership of Pete Guimond - N1EZT, club members were dispatched to road crossings, off-road checkpoints and re-fuel stops, to provide Race Officials and Emergency Workers with communications support. They also provided logistics assistance at the start/finish line and throughout the course which covered 142 miles through the towns of Wrentham, Foxboro, Plainville, Cumberland, RI, Bellingham and Franklin.
The Enduro, a national event this year, was sponsored by the New England Trail Rider's Association. It is an on and off road motorcycle race that incorporates bike handling skills as well as timing, map reading and mileage calculation skills. The riders are given a map, a route sheet with turn and mileage instructions as well as average speed information that must be adhered to. There are 15 checkpoints hidden in the woods and if a rider arrives early, he or she is penalized points. The riders have to adhere to the average speeds and their route sheets to place well in the event.
SMHARC members worked with checkpoint staff, local police and emergency officials at various spots during the course of the day. Scott - N1SEC, assisted Peter with command center duties while Bruce - KA1IG acted as a Mobile Net Control, being driven around by Pete's son Matt. Peter, Scott and Marty - KB1DRL, began the day by climbing the trail to Joe's Rock in Wrentham at 5:30 AM to install a temporary crossband repeater for race use. Other operators in attendance were Will - N1DPY, Fred - W1CI, Joe - W1TW, Fred - KA1CQD and Jim - N1IV. As the race progressed and early check points were closed, operators were transferred further up the course to new check points as needed. The race ended at approximately 4:30 P.M. with every rider (and radio operator) accounted for and safe.
Thanks to everyone involved for a major job handled with the skill and professionalism that has always been synonymous with Amateur Radio communications. A special thanks and commendation to Peter for his leadership. The sheer number of riders, course workers, volunteers and square miles that had to be scheduled around, made this event a major logistical challenge. There were over 200 riders, 25 -30 course workers and many local police and medical personnel involved. Peter, with Scott's help, handled everything that came at him and did it very well.
